Four passengers died after a boat carrying eight people capsized at Dudduru Pond in the Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at about 4 p.m., according to a statement from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Jigawa State Command.
The vessel was travelling from Kwadige Village to the Chai Chai Sabuwa Market when it overturned roughly three kilometres from Kwadige Village. Preliminary findings suggest that strong winds may have caused the accident.
“Sadly, four passengers, all females, lost their lives in the incident, while the remaining four passengers were successfully rescued,” the NSCDC statement read.
The deceased were identified as Hasiya Mu’azu, 13; Hauwa Lawan, 13; Fatima Lawan, 12; and Dawsiyya Lawan, 13. All four were buried according to Islamic rites.
Survivors were pulled from the water by farmers working near the pond, with additional assistance from residents of Kwadige and nearby Kuna villages. NSCDC Jigawa State Commandant CC Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged boat users to exercise extra caution during strong winds or adverse weather, emphasizing the need to follow basic water‑safety rules.
