Former Super Eagles captain William Troost‑Ekong, 33, announced his conversion to Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar, according to a report by Qatari newspaper Al‑Arab on Wednesday.
An Islamic scholar, Dr Muhammad Salah, posted a video on his verified Facebook page that shows Troost‑Ekong reciting the testimonies of faith, confirming the defender’s new religious affiliation.
Troost‑Ekong began his career in the Arab region in 2024 when he signed for Saudi Arabian side Al‑Khaleej. He later moved to Qatar, joining Al‑Ahli in January 2026 on an 18‑month contract. Since his arrival he has made 14 appearances for the Doha‑based club across all competitions, including one appearance this season.
At international level, Troost‑Ekong represented Nigeria from 2015 to 2025, earning 83 caps and scoring eight goals. He was a key member of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s best player. He also featured for Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, becoming one of the country’s most experienced defenders.
