FG Reviews 1978 Nigeria-Saudi Air Service Agreement for More Hajj Slots
The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated a review of the 1978 Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the country and Saudi Arabia, aiming to secure additional slots for transporting Nigerian pilgrims during the Hajj pilgrimage.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed the development following a meeting with key stakeholders involved in the Hajj operations.
The review is expected to address the capacity limitations faced by Nigerian airlines in transporting a larger number of pilgrims during the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.
Keyamo stated that the meeting focused on finding ways to increase the quota of Nigerian pilgrims that local airlines can transport while ensuring that Nigerian pilgrims are treated fairly and respectfully.
The 1978 BASA sets the framework for air services between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, while the 2015 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlines arrangements for sharing the responsibility of transporting Nigerian pilgrims annually.
A joint technical team has now been assigned the task of reviewing both the 1978 BASA and the 2015 MOU, aiming to diplomatically engage with Saudi authorities for more Hajj slots.
