Minister of Power Engr. Joseph Tegbe told reporters in Abuja on Monday that the Federal Government has no plan to withdraw electricity subsidies or raise power tariffs next year, dismissing circulating reports to the contrary. The clarification came during a press briefing marking his first 100 days in office.
Tegbe said the government will not introduce any tariff increase that would further burden Nigerians, emphasizing that the priority remains improving electricity supply rather than adding financial pressure on consumers.
He noted that the administration’s focus is to ensure Nigerians receive better service without imposing additional costs, reaffirming the commitment to keep electricity affordable for households and businesses.
The minister added that the government will continue to work on enhancing power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure to provide more reliable electricity across the country.
Nigeria’s power sector has long struggled with frequent outages and high costs, prompting the government to subsidise electricity to keep consumer prices low. Tegbe’s statements signal that maintaining those subsidies and avoiding tariff hikes will remain a policy goal as the sector seeks greater reliability.
