The Federal Government has blamed a shortage of gas, reduced hydroelectric output and maintenance work for recent electricity supply disruptions in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo states.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, the Federal Ministry of Power said it was working to restore normal supply in the affected areas and acknowledged the impact on households, businesses and public institutions.

“We recognise what every hour without power means for individuals, families and businesses, and we do not take it lightly,” the ministry said, adding that the outages were not caused by a major or systemic failure of the national grid.

Preliminary assessments indicated that the disruptions stemmed from maintenance and operational issues within the power ecosystem, coupled with a decline in generation due to constraints in gas supply to thermal power stations and lower water inflows into hydroelectric reservoirs.

The ministry disclosed that Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe is working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to accelerate restoration, fast‑track ongoing maintenance and provide regular updates to consumers.

“Nigerians deserve better power, and this administration is working to deliver it,” the statement added, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving electricity supply.

Minister Tegbe thanked consumers for their patience and understanding, promising further updates as restoration progresses. The statement was signed by Adeola Adelabu, Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the Minister.
