The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has opened an investigation into a fatal clash that took place on Thursday night in the Life Camp area of Abuja, where officers from the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) confronted commercial motorcyclists known as Okada riders.

Video footage that has circulated online shows a motorcyclist allegedly being shot during the confrontation. According to the Daily Post, the incident began when VIO personnel, part of a task force created by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), were enforcing a ban on motorcycles on the city’s major roads.

The clash reportedly started after a heated argument between the VIO officers and a commercial motorcyclist, escalating into a violent confrontation that left at least one rider dead.

In a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Command said that normalcy had been restored in the area following a directive from the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi. Adeh added that the CP had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the clash.

“The Command assures members of the public that further information will be made available as the investigation progresses. Normalcy has since been restored in the area, and members of the public are enjoined to remain calm and go about their lawful activities without fear or apprehension,” said Adeh.
