Formula 1 raced on the streets of Baku, Azerbaijan, this past weekend, offering a vivid snapshot of the sport as it exists today. The event was held a day earlier than usual after the championship re‑scheduled to avoid clashing with the country’s celebration of its recent war with Armenia.
The Baku circuit is a demanding mix of dusty city streets, concrete walls and a medieval fortress gate, followed by a 1.4‑mile (2.2 km) flat‑out stretch that leads to the finish line. Gusts of wind from the Caspian Sea a block away add another layer of challenge, while the track’s blend of modern and classical architecture sits alongside a massive hospitality and pit‑lane complex.
Because the walls are so close to the racing line, there is little margin for error at the high speeds F1 cars reach. Last year’s qualifying was interrupted by six red flags after crashes, but this year was less dramatic—except for a mishap involving championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
During the first of the three knockout qualifying sessions, the 20‑year‑old misjudged the amount of front grip he had going into turn 1 and clipped the corner of the wall with his left front tyre. Although Antonelli had already set a time good enough to advance, the damage forced him to abandon the session and start the race from 16th on the grid.
Antonelli’s fortunes had been mixed earlier in the season. At Monza, a penalty for a power‑unit change saw him start from 19th, but he later produced a spectacular drive to win the race, overtaking teammate George Russell. That victory was helped by two standing starts, one of which followed Charles Leclerc’s crash on lap 2.
In Baku, the tighter track and higher stakes will make it a much tougher task for Antonelli to recover the points he lost in qualifying.
