Former Premier League striker Jamie Redknapp has warned Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso that he must find a way to use “incredible” Brazilian forward Estevao Willian, after the Blues lost 3‑0 to Brentford on Friday and have now conceded at least two goals in each of their last five Premier League games.
The loss at Brentford extended a worrying run of defensive frailties for the Blues, who have struggled to find the net since the start of the campaign. Joao Pedro is currently sidelined with a knee injury, leaving Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers as the regular starters in the attacking positions behind the Brazilian.
Alonso has deployed a three‑defender formation, with Pedro Neto operating as the preferred right wing‑back and Pep Chavarria and Jorrel Hato alternating on the left. In this set‑up, Willian has been used sparingly, logging only 23 minutes across four substitute appearances.
“I look at Estevao. Is he too good a player not to play in this team? He is an incredible talent, but how do you get him in the team when you have Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro? These are the problems he has to solve,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports.
An earlier report this month suggested that Willian is concerned about his role within Alonso’s system and may reassess his commitment in January if circumstances do not improve.
Redknapp’s comments come as Chelsea look to turn their fortunes around in the Premier League, with the manager’s squad selection and tactical approach under scrutiny.
