Manchester United scored twice in stoppage time to snatch a dramatic 4-4 draw against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, but remain in the Premier League relegation zone.
United looked destined for another damaging defeat after Villa established a two-goal advantage in the second half. However, late strikes from Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu rescued a point for the hosts.
Villa made a blistering start, with Alysson opening the scoring in the first minute before Nicolas Jackson doubled their advantage three minutes later to put United under immediate pressure.
Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 16th minute, giving the hosts a route back into the contest.
United completed their first-half recovery when Youri Tielemans scored in the 44th minute to make it 2-2, leaving both sides level at the break.
However, Villa regained control shortly after the restart. John McGinn converted a penalty in the 48th minute before Leon Goretzka extended the visitors’ lead to 4-2 in the 53rd minute.
United struggled to break down Villa’s defence for much of the second half, with the visitors appearing comfortable as they protected their advantage.
The hosts, however, refused to surrender and mounted a late comeback to avoid defeat in front of their home supporters.
Zirkzee gave United renewed hope in the 92nd minute after converting Patrick Dorgu’s low delivery across the penalty area.
Dorgu then completed the comeback in the 97th minute, heading home from a corner to level the score at 4-4 and spark celebrations among the home supporters.
The result leaves Manchester United in the bottom three despite rescuing a point, extending their disappointing start to the league campaign. Their only Premier League victory this season came in August.
For Aston Villa, the draw represents a missed opportunity to secure a significant away victory after twice surrendering a two-goal advantage.
The result also denied Unai Emery’s side a chance to claim only their fifth Premier League victory at Old Trafford, leaving the visitors frustrated after coming close to securing all three points.
