The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called the Saturday local government election in Enugu State a “selection” rather than a genuine contest, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of running a one‑party affair.
In a statement issued by its media team and signed by spokesperson Paul Anigbogu, the ADC said that the chairmen and councillors had already been chosen by the state government and the APC, and that public funds were wasted on an exercise that was essentially a “coronation” of hand‑picked candidates.
“Today, traders did not open their shops. Commercial drivers did not work and daily income earners went hungry, all because the APC government in Enugu State purportedly conducted a local government election between APC and APC,” the party said.
The party also condemned the movement restrictions imposed across the state during the poll, arguing that they disrupted economic activity and prevented residents from conducting lawful businesses.
Looking ahead, the ADC’s 2027 governorship candidate, Ocho Obodoeze, pledged to ensure “genuine competition and grassroots participation” if elected, and vowed to stop “waste of public funds on charades called elections.”
Under an ADC administration, the party promises to prioritise road construction in the three senatorial districts, prompt payment of workers’ and teachers’ salaries, and the payment of pensioners’ gratuities and monthly pensions, while protecting freedom of movement and the right of residents to conduct businesses.
