EFCC Witness Tells Court: Ministry Did Not Approve CBN's N124.86bn Withdrawal

A witness from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) testified in a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory that the withdrawal of N124.86 billion from the Consolidated Revenue Account by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under Godwin Emefiele did not pass through the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Speaking before the court, the witness, Ali Mohammed, who is a director in the Federal Ministry of Finance's Home Finance Unit, stated that he received a letter from the Special Investigations Unit appointed by President Bola Tinubu to probe the CBN's transaction.

Mohammed mentioned that he convened an emergency meeting of the three divisions under his supervision after receiving the letter from the Special Investigations Unit. He denied knowledge of the transaction during the meeting.

The witness further stated that his findings on the transactions were relayed to the Special Investigations Unit in response to his request. The letters from the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation were subsequently tendered as evidence in the case and were accepted without objection from Emefiele's lawyer, Olalekan Ojo, SAN.

Further proceedings in the case have been scheduled for October 7th for cross-examination of the witness by the defense.
