On Wednesday, the Ebonyi State House of Assembly approved a bill that revises the salaries of local‑government chairmen, councillors, development centre coordinators and other public office holders in the state.
The amendment, which changes Schedules A and C of Law No. 004 of 2008 (as amended in 2015), was presented to the House following a letter from Governor Francis Nwifuru. Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa said the proposal mainly concerned the remuneration schedules for officials at the local‑government and development‑centre levels.
Under the new Schedule A, local‑government chairmen will receive ₦450,000 and vice‑chairmen ₦400,000. Supervisors will be paid ₦230,000, secretaries ₦240,000 and special assistants to chairmen ₦165,000.
Schedule C sets the pay for legislative leaders at ₦300,000, deputy leaders ₦250,000 and councillors ₦230,000. Development centre coordinators will earn ₦277,000 and members of management committees ₦226,000.
“The bill was specifically focused on reviewing and amending the remuneration schedules applicable to the affected office holders,” said Leader of the House Rt. Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, citing Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution as the legal basis for the Assembly’s authority.
During the debate, Ikoro moved a motion to dissolve the House into a Committee of the Whole, which was seconded by Hon. Friday Ogbuewu of Ezza South. After the committee’s review, the Speaker reported the revised figures and praised Governor Nwifuru for his commitment to improving the welfare of the people and strengthening grassroots administration. Ikoro then moved the motion for passage, seconded by Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu of Ikwo North, and the bill was passed unanimously by voice vote.
Speaker Odunwa instructed Clerk Mrs. Edene Uche Blessing to notify Governor Nwifuru of the amendment’s passage. The new remuneration schedule is part of Ebonyi State’s ongoing effort to enhance local governance and public service delivery in southeastern Nigeria.
