In a statement released today, Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), cautioned against any attempts to cancel or postpone Nigeria’s 2027 general elections because of the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

Adebayo, who has been campaigning across the country, said that the health crisis should not be used as a pretext to alter the electoral timetable. He urged political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the government to uphold the scheduled election dates.

The Ebola virus, which has caused sporadic outbreaks in West Africa, remains a public health concern in Nigeria. However, the SDP’s candidate stressed that the electoral process must continue as planned to preserve democratic integrity.

He added that any decision to shift the election would undermine public confidence and could set a dangerous precedent for future crises. Adebayo called on all stakeholders to focus on robust health measures rather than changing the election schedule.

With the 2027 general election approaching, the political landscape remains tense. Adebayo’s warning highlights the tension between public health priorities and the need to maintain a stable electoral timetable in Nigeria.
