The Kwankwasiyya Movement has warned that the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could jeopardise preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by spokesperson Dr Habibu Saleh Mohammed, the movement urged that the uncertainty surrounding the ADC’s leadership and candidate selection not undermine the democratic process.

The warning follows a Federal High Court judgment delivered on Thursday that invalidated the caretaker leadership of the ADC, which had been headed by former Senate President David Mark. The court also annulled the party’s internal processes, including the selection of former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar as the ADC’s presidential candidate.

According to the movement, prolonged legal disputes over opposition party leadership could weaken Nigeria’s democratic space and hamper the ability of opposition parties to organise and participate effectively in the upcoming elections.

“The uncertainty surrounding the ADC’s leadership and nominations should not be allowed to translate into the disenfranchisement of party members, aspirants and millions of Nigerians who expect a competitive and credible electoral process in 2027,” the statement read. It called on the judiciary to uphold the principles of independence, fairness and transparency in handling political disputes, stressing that all parties must be given a fair hearing.

The movement also urged the Federal Government to ensure that opposition parties are allowed to operate freely without interference from any government institution or agency. It asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain neutral and to follow the law and valid court orders in dealing with the ADC leadership dispute.

“We are not asking the courts to favour any political party or individual. We are asking that justice be done fairly, consistently and without fear or favour,” the statement added. It urged all parties involved to pursue available legal options peacefully and to allow appellate courts to determine outstanding issues without political interference.

Ultimately, the movement said that public confidence in democratic institutions depends not only on the judgments they deliver but also on whether Nigerians consider those decisions fair and impartial.
