The Dickson Movement for Democracy (TDM) has publicly backed the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) decision to bring support groups and affiliated movements under a coordinated regulatory framework ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comr. Ogbidi Emmanuel, the TDM welcomed the NDC leadership’s move as a “decisive step” that will strengthen coordination, discipline and unity among the party’s supporters. The statement was issued after the NDC announced plans to regulate and reposition the support groups that mobilise backing for the party and its candidates.
“We believe and understand that the relationship between the party and its candidates is like Siamese twins. It is not possible for any genuine support group to support a candidate and not support his party responsible for his sponsorship,” the TDM said, underscoring its view that support for an NDC candidate must automatically extend to the party and its other nominees.
The movement argued that the proposed regulation would help the NDC identify genuine support organisations, understand their activities and ensure that such groups operate in line with the party’s broader interests. “Orderliness is the very foundation of increase,” the TDM added, warning that the new framework would prevent individuals or groups from unknowingly working at cross‑purposes with the party.
Comr. Ogbidi also pledged that the TDM would work with the NDC to mobilise “total support” for all party candidates at national and sub‑national levels, explicitly naming the NDC presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The movement stressed that it would not engage in selective backing of particular candidates but would instead mobilise a comprehensive, party‑wide effort.
Recognising Nigeria’s diverse political and social landscape, the TDM called on other NDC‑affiliated support groups to embrace the party’s coordination efforts regardless of size or popularity. It urged that the varied constituencies of different groups be used to broaden the NDC’s reach, noting that “no singular movement can successfully mobilise Nigerians effectively for any election cycle.”
Reaffirming its commitment, the TDM said it would continue to collaborate with the NDC and other affiliated bodies to build a broad‑based mobilisation structure in the run‑up to the 2027 elections.
