It's not uncommon for an issuer to periodically add one or two valuable benefits to an already popular credit card. But those changes usually come with higher annual fees.
That's a big reason the latest updates to Amex Delta SkyMiles credit cards are so good; from two free checked bags to new rideshare credits with select cards, they result in potentially several hundred dollars in added value each year — for the same annual fees. To boot,
Amex Delta card welcome offers have also increased for a limited time.
Here's what you need to know about these new American Express
Delta credit card improvements.
Beginning June 4, 2026, all six annual fee-incurring Delta credit cards offer up to two free checked bags per cardmember on domestic Delta flights (one free checked bag for international flights). Note, the primary cardholder and up to eight companions on the same reservation still receive a first checked bag for no charge.
Both personal and small business versions of the
Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card, Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card benefit from these changes.
The
Delta SkyMiles Gold and Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card now come with up to $120 in rideshare credit annually (up to $10 per month in statement credits when using either card on U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers). This matches the rideshare credits offered by more premium Delta credit cards, such as the Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Delta SkyMiles Reserve. Enrollment is required.

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

Welcome bonus value
The exact value you'll get for your rewards depends on
how you use Delta SkyMiles. At a minimum, Delta credit card holders can redeem them at a rate of 1 cent each toward flights using Delta's Pay With Miles feature. Redeeming them in this way means you can expect between $900 and $1,250 in Delta airfare with these bonuses.
But you can do a whole lot better when booking award flights. For example, a business class flight on Delta from Detroit (DTW) to Frankfurt, Germany (FRA) currently costs around 115,000 Delta miles (or 97,700 miles after the
TakeOff 15 award flight discount you'll get from holding an eligible Delta credit card). This same ticket sells for around $8,900 at the time of writing. That translates to an incredible value of 9.1 cents per Delta SkyMile. Delta credit cards can absolutely be worth it — even if you're an infrequent traveler. These newly added benefits make them even more compelling for Delta flyers. For example:
- Delta charges $45 for your first bag and $55 for your second bag on domestic flights. In other words, checking two bags will cost you $100 each way. This new second-checked-bag benefit could be worth $200 per round-trip flight per cardmember. Depending on your specific Delta credit card, this checked baggage perk could easily offset your annual fee after just a trip or two.
- If you routinely spend $10 per month with eligible rideshare companies, like Uber and Lyft, the rideshare credit offered by the
Delta SkyMiles Goldand Delta SkyMiles Gold Businessmay be as good as cash to you.
- If you book a flight with a travel buddy at least once per year, you'll likely get good value from the annual Companion Certificate that comes with cards like the
Delta SkyMiles Platinumand Delta SkyMiles Reserve(and their business counterparts). You can use it to book an eligible Delta flight on the cheap — and you can now redeem it for the flight portion of a Delta Vacations package, too. Read more about it in our guide to airline companion passes.
If you almost never find yourself on a Delta flight, you may prefer a
travel card that earns transferable points instead. Cards like the American Express® Gold Card earn flexible American Express Membership Rewards® points which convert into many different airline rewards currencies, including Air Canada Aeroplan, British Airways, Air France and more. That way, you're not pigeonholed into redeeming your rewards exclusively through Delta.
You won't get the same valuable Delta-specific perks with a non-Delta credit card — but you'll have many more options when it comes to booking your (nearly) free vacation.
