Former Democratic Republic of the Congo president Joseph Kabila, together with a group of signatories, has announced the creation of the Front pour la refondation de la nation (FRN), a new politico‑military movement aimed at addressing the country’s worsening political, security, economic and social crises.

In a statement released by the FRN, Kabila and his colleagues said that the deepening crises have made a fundamental change in governance “necessary.” The movement intends to bring together various resistance forces under a single umbrella in order to pursue a new direction for the nation.

“The country's deepening political, security, economic and social crises have made a fundamental change in its governance necessary,” the signatories wrote.

While details of the FRN’s organisational structure remain sparse, the group has outlined a plan to unite disparate opposition groups and military factions, hoping to provide a coordinated alternative to the current administration.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has long struggled with instability, including armed conflict in the eastern provinces and chronic economic hardship. The launch of the FRN reflects growing frustration among some political actors that existing institutions have failed to deliver lasting solutions.
