The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said Saturday’s bye‑elections in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states were being used as a “test” of its systems and logistics ahead of Nigeria’s scheduled 2027 general elections.
The polls were held in four constituencies: Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, addressed the nation from the commission’s National Situation Room in Abuja, saying the four bye‑elections “provide indispensable operational lessons for the Commission as we systematically chart our roadmap toward the 2027 General Election.”
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary Adedayo Oketola, Amupitan stressed that the commission would use the exercises to assess its logistics, technology and administrative preparations, adding that bye‑elections should not be treated as routine because they offer important insights that can strengthen future elections.
Amupitan monitored reports from the election sites alongside national commissioners and senior officials, noting that several operational challenges identified before the vote were addressed promptly. The National Situation Room was also employed to track developments and resolve any issues that could affect the smooth conduct of the polls.
Concluding his remarks, the INEC chairman pledged to “continue to improve our processes to achieve greater efficiency and build public confidence in future elections.”
