On Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results of five legislative bye‑elections held across Delta, Kano, Bauchi and Gombe states. The All Progressives Congress (APC) secured four of the five seats, while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) captured one in Bauchi.
In Delta State, APC candidate Ator Okolosi won the Udu state assembly seat with 8,724 votes, defeating Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival George Orugbo who scored 212 votes. APM’s Omovie Esther received 33 votes.
In Kano State, the APC’s Hussaini Yusuf Datti triumphed in the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa state constituency, polling 22,890 votes. The PDP candidate garnered 180 votes, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) 270, the Action Peoples Party (APP) 53 and the Labour Party (LP) 39.
In Gombe, Engr. Usman Maijama’a Kallamu of the APC won the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye federal constituency bye‑election with 41,121 votes. INEC reported a total of 47,301 votes cast, of which 46,551 were valid and 750 rejected.
Bauchi State saw two separate contests. In Disina, APC’s Yakubu Ali won with 5,846 votes, narrowly beating APM’s candidate who scored 5,225. In Sakwa, APM’s Adamu Yakubu won 8,515 votes against the APC’s 3,771. The Disina seat had become vacant after the incumbent resigned to contest a local government chairmanship, while the Sakwa vacancy followed the death of former lawmaker Mohammad Wanzam Zaki.
APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda praised INEC and security agencies for their role in the elections. In a statement on X, he congratulated the four APC winners – Kallamu Usman Maijama’a, Hussaini Datti, Ator Okolosi and Yakubu Ali – and urged them to remain humble and committed to service. “These victories reflect the confidence placed in our candidates and the APC by the electorate,” he said.
“The spread of those votes for the APC across the three regions is very significant going into the general elections in January. The makers of our Constitution that insisted that, for someone to be President of Nigeria, you have to secure 25 percent of the votes in two‑thirds of the States in the country were no fools, taking into account the heterogeneous nature of Nigeria,” declared Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo.
