A Victorian coroner has heard allegations that birthkeeper Emily Lal groomed pregnant women to fear hospital births, a claim that could lead to criminal charges.

During the hearing, it was alleged that Lal told Stacey Warnecke that her “condition and mindset” needed to be “solid” in order to avoid a hospital birth.

Warnecke, who died in September 2025 at Frankston Hospital in Melbourne, gave birth at home and suffered a postpartum haemorrhage with Lal by her side. She had paid Lal $6,000 for support throughout her pregnancy.

The coroner may refer the matter to prosecutors, who could pursue criminal charges against Lal if the allegations are substantiated.

The case has raised concerns about the regulation of birthkeeping services and the safety of home births in Victoria.
