Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, said a cyber‑theft of roughly $6.34 billion in digital assets was carried out after a hacker posing as a recruiter conducted a fake job interview with one of its employees.
The exchange explained that the impostor convinced the employee to install malicious software during the interview, which then gave the attackers remote access to Binance’s wallet infrastructure. Once inside, the hackers were able to move funds from the platform’s hot wallets.
The breach resulted in the loss of $6.34 billion, making it one of the biggest cryptocurrency heists ever recorded. Binance said the stolen assets were transferred to a series of wallets that are under investigation.
Binance identified the perpetrators as a North Korean hacking group, a claim that aligns with previous reports linking the regime’s cyber‑actors to large‑scale financial crimes that fund its weapons programs.
The exchange said it is cooperating with law‑enforcement agencies and cybersecurity firms to investigate the incident, attempt asset recovery and reinforce its security measures, highlighting the persistent threats facing the digital‑asset industry.
