Shehu Sani: Being in Prison Doesn't Mean Someone is Evil
Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has argued that prisons should not be viewed as places of punishment only, but as correctional centers where individuals can reform, build character, and prepare for reintegration into society.
Speaking at the 1st Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Security, Welfare Agenda (SWAC) Conference Graduation Ceremony in Kaduna, Sani emphasized the importance of understanding the purpose of correctional institutions.
Sani stated that many people lack knowledge about the purpose of correctional centers, stating that "being in prison does not automatically mean that someone is dangerous or evil in society. It can also be a place where individuals are given an opportunity to learn, reform, and prepare themselves for a better life."
The former senator highlighted the need for correctional centers to help inmates develop the capacity to endure challenges, overcome difficult circumstances, and view life from a better perspective.
Sani's words were delivered through a representative, Malam Nasiru Abbas, who represented him at the event due to unforeseen circumstances.
