Netherlands head coach Xavi Hernandez has predicted that Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal will be the recipient of the 2026 Ballon d’Or, describing the Spain international as a "different" and "special" talent.
Hernandez made the remarks ahead of his managerial debut against Germany in a Nations League match scheduled for Thursday. Speaking to SPORT at the KNVB headquarters in Zeist, the former Barcelona manager expressed strong confidence in his former player’s trajectory.
“Lamine is special, he’s different, he’s 19 and he will undoubtedly win it [2026 Ballon d’Or], but this would be a good year for him to win it now,” Xavi said.
The comments highlight the high regard in which the young winger is held by those who have worked with him at the highest level. Xavi previously coached Yamal during his tenure as manager of the Catalan club, providing him with direct insight into the player’s development and potential.
