Australia recorded its second hottest September on the continent last month, with temperatures that topped the national climate archive.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the minimum night‑time temperatures across the country were the highest for any September since records began in 1910. Average temperatures were ranked in the top five warmest Septembers for every state, and the sixth hottest for the Northern Territory.

Even the alpine regions were affected. In Kosciuszko National Park, snow depth fell to zero, a record low that underscored the intensity of the heatwave.

Scientists say the combination of global warming and a strengthening El Niño contributed to the string of heat records that spanned the country.

These findings add to growing evidence that the climate crisis is manifesting in increasingly extreme weather events across Australia.
