August Meeting: Enugu commissioner harps on unity, girl-child education

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development in Enugu State, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, has emphasized the importance of unity and self-development among women, describing them as a driving force for socioeconomic development. She made this call on the final day of the General August Meeting of Nomeh Unateze United Women Association in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Mrs. Enih noted that the theme of the 2026 August Meeting, "Resilience," reflects the need for unity, commitment, self-development, and perseverance in achieving shared goals. She encouraged women to send their children, including the girl-child, to school, highlighting that Governor Peter Mbah has made quality education accessible through the establishment of 267 Smart Green Schools in all 260 wards of the state.

The Commissioner stressed that these schools provide free education, along with free meals, uniforms, and learning materials. She reminded the women of their fundamental rights and the need to work together to combat gender-based violence. Mrs. Enih donated cash and wrappers to the women, urging them to remain united and focused on their goals.

The Patron of Nomeh Unateze United Women Association, Mrs. Chinwe Okonkwo, commended Governor Mbah for his developmental projects in the community and urged him to continue leading the state effectively. The incumbent President of the Association, Mrs. Chinelo Egbo, announced the women's total support for the governor in 2027.

Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to the Enugu State Governor on Media, Uche Anichukwu, highlighted the numerous development projects being executed by the Mbah administration in the community, including road construction and healthcare facilities. He urged the women and the community to continue supporting the governor and the All Progressives Congress.

The 2026 August General Meeting featured various activities, including engagement with community sectors, counselling sessions, health education, vocational training, and teachings on preventing gender-based violence. The meeting was declared open by the traditional ruler of the community, HRH Igwe Lt. Col. Israel Mbah.

Mrs. Enih's message of resilience and unity was well-received by the women, who were encouraged to remain committed to their goals and support one another in the face of challenges. The meeting provided an opportunity for women to review progress, address challenges, and work towards building a better society.
