South African police confirmed that two separate mass shootings near the country’s largest cities left at least 27 people dead on Sunday.
The first attack occurred on Saturday night at a bar in Wedela township, south‑west of Johannesburg. Eight suspects, armed with AK‑47 rifles and pistols, opened fire, killing 17 people and injuring at least 15 others, the police said.
In a separate incident, a barbecue venue near Cape Town was the scene of a shooting that claimed the lives of 10 people. Police have not yet released details about the number of injured in that attack.
Both incidents highlight a growing concern over gun violence in South Africa, a country that already struggles with high rates of firearms crime.
Authorities are investigating the motives behind the shootings and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The police have not identified the suspects or confirmed whether the two attacks were connected.
