In a decision that could provide a much‑needed boost to the city’s homelessness relief efforts, an appeals court ordered the Trump administration to release $239 million in federal funds earmarked for Los Angeles.
The order came after a lawsuit filed by the city and a coalition of charities argued that the federal government had failed to deliver on its promise to provide the money that would help build shelters, offer mental‑health services and support other programs aimed at reducing the number of people sleeping on the streets.
Los Angeles has long struggled with one of the largest homeless populations in the United States. In 2023 the city counted more than 66,000 people experiencing homelessness, many of whom were found in encampments in downtown and other parts of the city.
