NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, which had been orbiting the Earth for almost 22 years, re‑entered the atmosphere on 4 November 2026 at 7:39 EST. The satellite burned up over the North Sumatra region of Indonesia, marking the end of a long‑running mission that studied the universe’s most violent explosions.

Swift’s final days were the subject of a recent Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) feature. The image is a mosaic created in 2018 from the first one million pictures taken by the observatory’s Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope. It showcases the wealth of data the satellite gathered over its lifetime.

During its operation, Swift carried a suite of instruments that worked together to detect and analyze gamma‑ray bursts, X‑ray flares and other high‑energy phenomena. The combination of an X‑ray telescope, a gamma‑ray telescope and an ultraviolet/optical telescope allowed scientists to observe these events in unprecedented detail.

The satellite’s orbit had been gradually decaying, a process accelerated by the most recent solar maximum. An attempt to rescue Swift by boosting its orbit was not successful, and the craft ultimately succumbed to atmospheric drag.

Although Swift has burned up, the data it collected will continue to illuminate the mysteries of the cosmos for years to come. The APOD image, credited to NASA/Swift and AndreaMosaic, is a fitting tribute to a mission that inspired new generations of space exploration.

APOD is produced by the Astronomy Picture of the Day service at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, in partnership with the Science Activation Division and Michigan Technological University. The image was released on 6 November 2026 and was written by Cecilia Chirenti, Robert Nemiroff, Jerry Bonnell and Keighley Rockcliffe.
