Angola’s Tax Authority (AGT) has awarded Portuguese academic Carla Trindade two consultancy contracts, worth a combined 551 million kwanzas, to assist in the investigation of tax offences.
According to documents reviewed by the investigative outlet Maka Angola, the contracts raise concerns because they were awarded while irregularities were identified in dealings between Trindade’s husband’s company and the AGT.
Both Trindade and her husband are named in a criminal complaint that has been formally lodged with prosecutors. The complaint alleges a range of offences, including money laundering, tax evasion and other related crimes.
Maka Angola’s review highlights the potential conflict of interest, noting that the consultancy contracts were granted despite the ongoing investigation into the couple’s alleged illicit activities.
The AGT has not yet issued a statement regarding the contracts or the criminal complaint, and the case remains under scrutiny by prosecutors and the public.
