Chairman Joash Amupitan of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reassured Nigerians that the commission is determined to uphold electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections. He made the statement while presiding over operations at INEC’s National Situation Room in Abuja during a series of by‑elections held on Saturday in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states.
Amupitan’s comments were aimed at dispelling rumours that he had used a recent overseas trip to conspire with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other stakeholders to rig the 2027 presidential poll. He stressed that INEC’s mandate is “monitoring and proactive crisis resolution” and that any administrative or field challenges before the election day were swiftly identified and resolved.
“Our primary mandate in the Situation Room is monitoring and proactive crisis resolution. Whatever administrative or field challenges arose before the day of the elections, the commission was able to nip them in the bud effectively,” Amupitan said in a statement e‑signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola.
He added that the by‑elections serve as a crucial operational benchmark for testing the nation’s electoral infrastructure. “Every election is a critical component of our broader preparations for the 2027 general elections, allowing us to continuously audit our logistics framework, stress‑test our technological deployment, and evaluate administrative field readiness,” he said.
Accompanied by national commissioners and senior management, Amupitan thanked the technical team for ensuring seamless monitoring of the multi‑state exercise. He praised the field performance and highlighted the importance of these exercises as dress rehearsals for the forthcoming nationwide polls.
