United Nations nature advisers have warned that almost every shallow‑water coral reef on Earth, including Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, faces a high risk of ecosystem collapse before 2075 as a result of global heating.

The assessment, which examined reefs in more than 80 countries, found that 24 % of the world’s coral reefs are already classified as critically endangered. When the projected impacts of rising temperatures are added, the proportion of reefs at risk jumps to 96 %.

According to the report, the accelerating loss of coral ecosystems is driven primarily by warming seas, which stress the delicate symbiosis between corals and the algae that give them colour and energy. The breakdown of this relationship leads to bleaching events and, ultimately, the death of the reef structure.

Scientists say the findings should serve as a “wake‑up call” for governments and policymakers, urging immediate action to curb greenhouse‑gas emissions and to implement measures that protect and restore coral habitats.

Coral reefs support a vast array of marine life and provide economic benefits to coastal communities through tourism and fisheries. The UN advisers’ warning underscores the urgency of addressing climate change to preserve these critical ecosystems for future generations.
