The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has warned that artificial intelligence cannot replace the human compassion and clinical judgement that lie at the core of patient care.

The NMCN is the statutory body that regulates nursing and midwifery practice across Nigeria, ensuring that professionals meet national standards of training and conduct.

Artificial‑intelligence tools are increasingly being integrated into healthcare settings worldwide, offering support for diagnostics, data analysis and administrative tasks. However, the council stresses that these technologies lack the empathetic touch and nuanced decision‑making that nurses provide.

In its statement, the NMCN registrar emphasized that while AI can assist with routine tasks, it cannot substitute for the bedside manner, ethical deliberation and personalized care that nurses deliver in hospitals and community health centres.

The warning highlights the enduring importance of human interaction in nursing, reminding health‑care providers that technology should augment, not replace, the compassionate care central to effective treatment.
