UN News has drawn attention to the stark differences in opportunities faced by children born in the same year across Africa. The report argues that access to education, social services, fair elections and a dynamic economy is a human right that should not be left to chance.
“Compare two children born in the same year: one in a country with functioning schools, social services, fair elections and a dynamic economy and the other in a nation devastated by poverty, conflict, climate change or corruption,” the UN statement reads, highlighting the unequal starting points for children in different African states.
The message stresses that equity, not charity, is the key to ensuring all children can reach their potential. When institutions work effectively, children benefit from reliable schooling, health care and democratic participation. When those institutions break down, children are left vulnerable to the effects of poverty and instability.
Many African countries continue to grapple with challenges that undermine development. Poverty, ongoing conflict, the impacts of climate change and corruption all contribute to a fragile environment where basic rights are not guaranteed.
By framing the right to development as a fundamental human right, the UN calls for policies that address these root causes rather than offering temporary aid. The aim is to create a level playing field where every child, regardless of their country of birth, can access the same opportunities for growth and prosperity.
