Prince Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has labeled President Bola Tinubu as one of the "worst" and most "lawless" leaders in Nigerian history. In a recent television interview, Adebayo accused the current administration of failing to fulfill its constitutional duties, specifically citing significant shortfalls in addressing national insecurity and persistent poverty.
The SDP candidate argued that the federal government’s primary responsibility is to ensure the security and welfare of its citizens, asserting that the Tinubu administration has neglected these core obligations. Adebayo criticized the executive branch for not implementing Section 162 of the Constitution or the Appropriation Act, describing the leadership as part of a series of presidents who fail to adhere to legal frameworks.
“President Tinubu is one of the worst in the series of lawless presidents who don’t implement the Constitution. They don’t implement Section 162 of the Constitution and they don’t implement the Appropriation Act,” Adebayo stated.
Rejecting the notion that increased government revenue automatically improves economic conditions, Adebayo emphasized the need to consider the purchasing power of Nigerians. He proposed a governance model he termed “cooperative federalism,” which advocates for the federal and state governments to collaborate on development projects irrespective of political differences. Under this framework, authorities would coordinate efforts in sectors such as roads, education, healthcare, agriculture, and security.
Adebayo illustrated his vision by explaining that federal and state road projects should be synchronized to ensure they link effectively. He further outlined a security strategy involving cooperation among federal, state, and local police structures to combat crime. He stressed that this collaboration should be driven by common development targets rather than political loyalty, applying regardless of which party controls a state government.
The candidate’s broader political platform, titled “Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity,” focuses on expanding access to food, housing, education, healthcare, and employment. Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Adebayo expressed openness to supporting another presidential candidate if a credible process emerges. He urged political actors to view the presidency as a public office rather than a personal entitlement, stating, “Presidency is not an inheritance; it’s an office that every Nigerian can aspire to.”
