On Tuesday, Victorian coroner Paul Lawrie announced that online betting was the direct and paramount cause behind the suicide of 22‑year‑old Kyle Hudson.
Hudson, who lived in Victoria, was described by the coroner as a young man brimming with promise, with a loving partner, supportive family and friends, and bright prospects.
“It was a near ideal picture – except for the grip that online sports betting had upon him,” the coroner said.
The inquest findings confirm that the pressure and influence of online sports betting were the decisive factors that led Hudson to take his own life.
The report underscores the impact of gambling on young people in Victoria.
