During a recent media parley, Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi dismissed claims made by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike that he would be among the first politicians to suffer if President Bola Tinubu lost the 2027 general elections.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, said he would face repercussions from figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Obi if Tinubu were defeated. He reiterated his support for Tinubu’s re‑election and stated that he had no regrets about his political stance.
Obi responded that he would not waste Nigeria’s time and resources pursuing personal vendettas. “In fact, somebody told me that Wike said if I become president, he will be one of the first victims. I cannot campaign to be president only to start pursuing people. That will be a waste of Nigerian time,” he said. “If I go there and leave my job, close the shop, which is Nigeria, and start pursuing people who didn’t want me or did wrong against me, it will be a mitigated disaster. I won’t be part of it. I want to go into office and focus on the job. I’m not against anybody.”
Obi added that he wishes those who disagree with him well and sees the 2027 election as an opportunity to faithfully serve Nigeria by ensuring that the right things are done within the law and with the resources available.
Neither side has issued further statements on the exchange, leaving the focus on the upcoming election campaign.
