Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), told Nigerians at a town‑hall meeting in Kaduna on Saturday that they should decide the issues politicians campaign on for the 2027 general elections, rather than having policies imposed on them.
Obi said the gathering was meant to hear directly from citizens and stressed that “politics should be demand‑driven, not supply‑driven.” He warned that politicians often present “glossy manifestos” and make promises they cannot keep once in office, adding that voters need to see realistic plans before elections.
He also called for an end to identity‑based politics, urging the country to move beyond tribal and religious divisions. “We don’t want politics of tribalism, politics of religion. No. We want politics of unity, politics of love, politics of care,” Obi declared.
Addressing the country’s worsening security situation, Obi pledged that an NDC administration would prioritize safety and restore confidence for Nigerians to travel freely. He promised to spend his holidays within Nigeria, visiting states such as Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Oyo and Ondo to monitor security challenges.
On education and social mobility, Obi said his government would ensure every child can attend school and that “a child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody.” NDC vice‑presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso highlighted the large turnout in Kaduna as evidence of growing support and listed the party’s key priorities:
