Former media aide Bashir Ahmad, who worked for the late ex‑President Muhammadu Buhari, has warned that the Northwest will be the most consequential region in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
Ahmad made the comment in a post on X, noting that the Northwest remains a key support base for President Bola Tinubu as the campaign season heats up.
According to the former aide, the region is Nigeria’s largest geopolitical zone and has more than 23.8 million registered voters, a figure recorded by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He added that supporters across the seven states in the Northwest are increasingly organising and mobilising ahead of the election.
“The Northwest, Nigeria’s largest geopolitical zone, will be the most consequential region in the 2027 presidential election. With more than 23.8 million registered voters recorded by INEC, our region carries enormous electoral weight. From my observation, the region remains a major centre of support for President Bola Tinubu, with supporters across the seven states increasingly organising and mobilising ahead of the election.”
Ahmad’s remarks come as parties and candidates intensify efforts to win the votes of the Northwest’s sizeable electorate.
