The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has formally rejected reports that it has joined a political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning parties and candidates that “impostors” are posing as its leaders and soliciting money.
Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr Boniface Aniebonam, issued a statement saying that expelled members were “parading themselves as leaders of the party with an intent to extort money from unsuspecting political parties and candidates.” He urged anyone who has paid fees to “unauthorised persons in the belief that such payments were for nomination or political alliance” to seek redress.
“Anyone who had allegedly paid money to unauthorised persons in the belief that such payments were for nomination or political alliance should seek redress from those involved,” Aniebonam said. “All contestants, coalitions or political parties who may have been duped should go back to the impostors for a refund of their money paid as contestants’ fees or for alliance.”
The party’s leadership clarified that the authentic NNPP, identified by its “basket of fruits” logo, is not a member of any coalition and remains an independent national party. Aniebonam added that the NNPP will announce any strategic alliances for the 2027 elections “if there is a need to.”
In his statement, Aniebonam listed the officials authorised to speak on behalf of the party: himself as Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Dr Agbo Gilbert Major as National Chairman; Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday as National Secretary; and Prince Omokanye Adetoyese as National Treasurer. The party’s website lists the same individuals in these roles.
With ongoing consultations and realignments among parties ahead of the upcoming elections, the NNPP’s warning underscores the need for political actors to verify the legitimacy of representatives before engaging in negotiations or financial commitments.
