Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, has said that the only way the Igbo people can produce Nigeria’s next president is through “dignity.” The comment was posted on the social‑media platform X, where Amadi has previously discussed the role of the South‑East in national politics.
“I have said it before, the only pathway to Igbo presidency in Nigeria is a path called ‘dignity’. Eji ndu eme gini (what is the value of life), talk less of Nigerian presidency, outside dignity.”
Amadi’s remarks come after a series of elections that saw the South‑East region, home to the Igbo, repeatedly called upon to supply the country’s leader. In 2019, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi served as the running mate of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) flag‑bearer, Atiku Abubakar, but the ticket lost the election.
In the 2023 presidential contest, Obi left the PDP to join the Labour Party and ran as its candidate. He finished third, behind Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and the eventual winner, the All Progressives Party’s (APC) candidate.
Obi has announced that he will again seek the presidency in 2027, this time on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The move underscores the ongoing ambition of Igbo leaders to secure the country’s highest office.
