In a meeting in Ibadan on 26 April 2027, Dr Gbenga Hashim, the Accord Party’s presidential candidate, and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State announced that they had agreed to pursue a Government of National Unity after the forthcoming election, which they expect will defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Hashim revealed the agreement on his verified Facebook page, stressing the need for a peaceful transition and a broad‑based government that would focus on rebuilding the country and restoring national unity.
“We are working hard to defeat the government of misery and hardship that the government has become,” Hashim said. “We both agreed on unity, not just to achieve peaceful change, but a stable and united Nigeria through the formation of a post‑election Government of National Unity.”
The leaders added that the agreement was not merely about unseating the ruling party but about ensuring a stable and united Nigeria once the election is over. Hashim said a post‑APC Nigeria would require the participation of competent and patriotic Nigerians from across political parties and backgrounds, warning that a narrow winner‑takes‑all approach would be detrimental.
He noted that the Ibadan meeting was part of broader consultations with other presidential candidates, and that the idea of a post‑Tinubu Government of National Unity is gaining traction among political leaders committed to stability and reconciliation.
The proposed unity government would aim to restore national cohesion, rebuild public confidence, strengthen institutions and mobilise skilled Nigerians to tackle the country’s economic and security challenges, Hashim added. “Nigeria belongs to all of us. After the election, we must put Nigeria first,” he said.
