Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal said he has no objection to teammate Pau Cubarsi winning this year’s Ballon d’Or, after both Spaniards were named among the final 30 nominees for the prestigious award.
Yamal made the comments in an interview with Spanish sports channel Teledeporte, where he praised Cubarsi’s talent and highlighted the young forward’s candidacy for the Kopa Trophy, the accolade given to the world’s best young player.
“Last year, for me, Cubarsi was the best young player in the world,” Yamal said. “Either the Kopa award or the Ballon d’Or should go to him. There’s no difference between us.”
“When I won it, I told him that he would be next. If he doesn’t win it for whatever reason, I will give it to him.”
The Ballon d’Or, awarded annually by France Football, recognises the top footballer worldwide, while the Kopa Trophy, introduced in 2018, celebrates emerging talent. Both Yamal and Cubarsi, who play for Barcelona, are expected to feature prominently in the upcoming voting process.
