On Saturday, authorities in Nasarawa State arrested 134 people across 13 local government areas for breaching the state’s environmental sanitation laws during the monthly sanitation exercise.
Dr Margaret Elayo, the Commissioner for Environment, Solid Minerals and Mining, disclosed the figures while addressing journalists in Lafia after the exercise. She said compliance had improved in September compared with the previous month.
According to the commissioner, tricycle operators—who had recorded the highest number of violations in the prior exercise—observed the restrictions this time, resulting in “no tricycle operators [coming] out during the exercise” and contributing to a smoother operation.
“Residents should make environmental cleanliness a daily habit instead of waiting for the monthly sanitation exercise. Market operators and those in motor parks should also clean their surroundings before opening for business,” Dr Elayo said.
She added that protecting the environment is essential for the overall health of the population.
Dr Abubakar Muhammad, the Chief Prosecuting Officer of Nasarawa’s sanitation courts, said 26 people were arraigned before a sanitation court in Lafia. He reiterated that the total of 134 arrests spanned the 13 local governments.
“We have a lot of compliance, and when you look at the environment, you can see just a few tricycles are here… We urge residents to obey environmental laws and support the government’s efforts to keep Nasarawa State clean and healthy,” Muhammad said.
